“The message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” NKJV
Hello, my name is Bob Cummins, and this is my Cross Testimony of how The Lord Jesus Christ instructs me in the construction and presentation of Barn Wood Crosses.
I was born in Duluth, Minnesota, and grew up 30 miles south and west in Barnum, Minnesota. I have been here all my life.
I was born the middle child of five. My dad was a farmer and during the summers he was a temporary section hand for the rail road. We milked eight cows and raised some hogs and chickens. Mom had a three acre garden. One acre of potatoes, one acre of vegetables and one acre of strawberries. We were no strangers to work. By the worlds standards we were poor. But we didn’t know it!
We did not grow up in a church family, but my mom made sure we all went to Sunday school if our chores were in order.
I graduated high school and went to heavy equipment training. For five years I drove earth scraping equipment. Then I was hired by Minnesota Power as a customer service representative and moved up into sales.
When I was 34 years old I attended a Full Gospel Meeting in Superior, Wisconsin. It was my first time in such an environment where Jesus Christ was freely taught and spoken about. The speaker gave a mini altar call — he asked anyone who wanted to receive Jesus Christ as Lord in their life to raise their hand. I was contemplating what to do when (an angel) bolted my arm into the air. I was stunned. Next to me was a young man who burst into tears. I thought — boy he has a lot of problems!
Later that night while in bed I spoke to Jesus. “Lord if you are real show me.” I fell asleep and in the middle of the night I was woken by a bright light — it consumed me and during my experience I saw all my sins, transgressions and ugliness flush into a sewer pipe. The light left, and I was a newly washed and cleansed Christian. That began my walk with Jesus.
The next morning it was time to look for a church. Looking in the phone book there was a church in Barnum, Minnesota. Never knew it was there! I attended and there a few rows away from me was the young man who was crying the night before. After the service I learned he was crying for me in intersession to the Lord!
I learned to love the Lord in that church and still attend. Eventually I retired from Minnesota Power. Then one night Jesus appeared to me asking me to make a Cross from Barn Wood. He said, “you make them, and I’ll show you what they are to look like. Then I’ll tell you what to write on them. Then I’ll let you know who to give the Cross to.”
Once again, I was stunned. Why me? Surely there are more spiritual, more talented and more gifted people than me for this type of thing. Then as I prayed I heard, “Why not you?”
That was more than 500 Barn Wood Crosses ago. And true to His word. The Lord will give me a vision of what the Cross should look like. I make it and when He approves He gives me what to write on the Cross. When He is satisfied with that He directs me who to give the Cross to.
Along the way I get requests to make a Cross for someone. But I can’t do it — I wait on the Lord for His direction.
I also get requests from people who want to buy a Cross. Can’t do it — the Lord has a special person for each Cross and I wait for His direction. One, two, three months or more. Then He tells me who. Usually it is someone I’ve never met before and will only meet once. At that once in a life-time meeting they receive a special handmade Cross. A gift from Jesus Christ. It’s not about me — it’s about Jesus. To God be all the glory!
My favorite Bible verse is Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit” NKJV
To me the Cross has always been special in my life. When I was a child I loved the Cross. The Cross means the forgiveness of Christ when Jesus died for my sins.
Each Cross the Lord directs me to give away is a special message from Him to the party receiving it. The message is that there is power in the Cross and through that power lives and hearts are changed.
I’ve seen the foulest mouthed people receive a Cross that Jesus had prepared for them, and their language was immediately washed in his blood. Their potty mouth disappeared, and it was replaced by praises to the Lord. THE POWER OF THE CROSS.
Prayer: Father thank you for such a time as this where Jesus works through who You choose for Your purposes. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!
